I think it’s boring. If a summary of your character looks like this, you’d better be worried. Of course, you probably have lots of great specific detail in your mind to fill in the gaps, but that’s no excuse. No story summary should look like this. Whether you write the summary for yourself, your query letter, your editor, or your back cover, it should make clear the protagonist’s role in the action.
That summary does make clear Joe’s role in the action, doesn’t it? His role is to be there while things are done to or around him.
Let’s try it again.
Joe takes a country drive to clear his head after another argument with his ex-wife about their son’s belligerence. Joe’s drive is purposeful, not random. We immediately understand something about his life and his troubles. A choice precipitated this drive. He could have stayed home, gone to a bar, called a friend . . .
